Yahk

Yahk is an unincorporated community in southeastern British Columbia, half-way between Creston and Cranbrook, and just north of the Canada-U.S. Idaho border on highway 3. Right in the middle of town one can find a great rest stop in the Yahk Provincial Park located on the Moyie River.

Logging, railroads, a highway and mining have always been the great influences of this area. Its commercial start began in 1900 and soon after families came and stayed. A one-room school was opened in 1918 and with it many small supporting structures. In 1928 the CPR sponsored European families arrived and the town of Yahk was growing rapidly. By 1931 a long grass runway had been built for a stopping point for the Trans Canada Airway between Lethbridge Alberta and Vancouver British Columbia, which was much welcomed work during the depression. Today you will still see the old hotels and a busy railway with much new logging here in 2019.

The local community centre here is an active hub for events, meetings and much more. Rarely could you find a more dedicated community, involved in making this centre a relevant resource for the local populus.

Yahk Area Water Treatment

While no municipal or centralized water system exists for Yahk there are many water sources in the area.

The Moyie river has served as the biggest source for many years, and those that live near it often have shallow wells.

These river or close river sources often have a high iron content and can suffer from low pH. A good calcite/corese system can raise the pH back to where an Iron filter can operate.

These are generally followed by UV sterilization system as the shallow wells like the Moyie are subject to natural bacteria contamination. A small reverse osmosis system for their cooking and drinking water will be the last stage of treatment.

The properties that lie further away from the river and those on the surrounding hillsides have deeper wells with hard water and present but often lesser metal content. With hardness there is usually no need for the calcite filter as the water will have a higher pH value. Water softeners and small systems become more common here.

The Community of Yahk

just a short note to thank you for your assistance. I got the system up and running today. It has been a pleasure doing business with you.
